Transmitter pre-emphasis of audio signals in FM and TV broadcasting requires that limiting be accomplished on a selective basis with respect to frequency. This paper reviews earlier attempts at such amplitude control and describes a new successful method for the prevention of FM overmodulation. An extrapolation of the method for disc recording is also discussed.
