The TDH-39 earphone is used by various audiometer manufacturers as the acoustic transducer in clinical audiometry. While the pressure response versus frequency characteristic exhibited by this earphone is satisfactory for most audiometric applications, there are instances where special circuitry has to be utilized to smooth out the basic response curve of the earphone. In addition, the interaction of the ear (mechanical or real) significantly affected the response of the earphone at 5500 Hz. Discussions with various audiometer manufacturers led us to attempt to develop an earphone physically similar to the TDH-39 but one which would have a smoother pressure response versus frequency.
