An underwater sound projector was developed at the U.S. Navy Underwater Sound Laboratory to meet project requirements for a source capable of simultaneous operation at two frequencies in the region below 5 kHz and towable at a speed of 5 knots at a depth of at least 4000 feet. An acoustic output of at least 100 watts at each frequency is provided, with bandwidths sufficient to permit pulses as short as 10 milliseconds. The source consists of two free-flooding magnetostrictive scroll arrays enclosed in a streamlined body for towing, with a pressure gage included as a depth indicator. A unique feature of the system is the capability for operation from a single sinusoidal signal source using a single conductor.
