An imaging technique is described which would permit either an originally recorded or simulated sound field to be reconstructed in a playback environment. The configuration and surface treatment of the playback enclosure is seen to dictate a required number and arrangement of sources for a desired region of convergence of the reconstructed field. The response of the playback enclosure to this source distribution is then viewed as a filter, which is manipulated to obtain the three-dimensional imaging properties of the desired space. It was found that a digital sampling frequency of 160 kHz is needed for valid reconstruction up to 20 kHz.
