A Technical View of a Totally Digital Audio Mixing Console

With the introduction of commercial digital audio consoles, now was felt to be the appropriate time to present a technical view of such a system rather than an operational view as has been previously published. Hence, with this in mind, this paper aims to present an overview from basic concepts to audio and control architectures relating to a 48-channel DSP console, thereby providing a basis for future more detailed papers on particular areas. Contained within the system are some 25,000 integrated circuits combining to give a very flexible and powerful console which can be applied to recording, broadcast, film, and other applications purely by changing the system configuration under software control. The inherent flexibility is such that even after nearly a year of commercial operation, sound recording engineers are still finding undiscovered features and new ways of utilizing the system.
