Intermodulation distortion caused by the rate of change of the signal is reported as measured on a multi-span radio relay chain carrying broadcast sound signals, on a stereophonic broadcast FM transmitter/receiver path, and on three audio mixing consoles. The distortion, measured with the DIM (Dynamic InterModulation) method, ranges from a percent up to forty percent for nominal signal levels under conditions where the conventionally measured total harmonic distortion is a fraction of a percent. As the composition of the measurement signal closely resembles real-life signals, the present results suggest that this effect may be of significance in sound recording and broadcasting.
