This paper is a survey of the current EBU studies in digital audio. The factors influencing the choice of parameters for studios, transmission, and broadcasting (emission) are discussed, and the current views of EBU specialists on each are given. For studios, a sampling-frequency of 48 kHz is believed to be the optimum. The paper outlines a serial 2-channel interface format using this sampling frequency. For broadcasting itself, 32 kHz and 14 bits/sample, plus in some cases companding, is believed to be the optimum. This paper outlines the multiplexing and modulation methods currently being studied for broadcasting using these parameters.
