For proper evaluation of companders and noise-reduction systems, measurements have to consider the non-ideal channel parameters. A test setup and test procedures are presented, which comprise a simulation unit for the analog tape or transmission channel. It allows a separated determination of the compander properties in presence of additive and modulation noise, linear and nonlinear distortions, as well as dropouts. Test methods are described and obtained results are given. Application of correlation and FFT-measurement techniques as well as a program-model test signals are discussed.
