Research into mechanisms of hearing has been traditionally carried out with the aid of rather simple -classical- stimuli: tones, clicks and noise. They have been employed in research involving humans as well as animals. The development of new types of audio instrumentation has now greatly expanded the range of experimentation possible and brought about a new era in hearing research. Two of the most promising instruments are the voltage controlled generator (VCG) and the narrow band noise generator. Their use in investigations of the critical band theory of hearing will be described.
