There appear to be fashions or prevalent modes of investigation in many sciences-modes made possible by new instruments and devices, such as lasers, masers, and special computers. In acoustics, much exploration of sound fields is presently carried out by sound pulses, implemented by oscillo-graphic examinations of the wave envelope. Reflected pulses are held beneficial when they arrive within a certain time interval after reception of the direct sound. For speech intelligibility, strong delayed reflections in the order of 60 milliseconds or longer are generally considered undesirable, in that they cause blurring or masking of significant speech components. It is the intent of the following to consider delayed reflections on a statistical basis.
