This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of research topics in audio engineering over the past four decades. This study’s aim is to examine the change of research trends by analyzing abstracts from the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society (JAES). Using the g-DMR topic modeling technique, the authors identified 16 key research trends from 2,038 abstracts from the JAES. These findings provide an analysis of how sound engineering has evolved in relation to the progress of media technology, showing the rise and fall of the research keywords such as spatial hearing, loudspeaker response and measurement, spatial reproduction, music information retrieval (MIR), etc. The authors hope that this historical analysis will help reflect on the society’s development and look to the future, with plans to expand the analysis with more comprehensive data covering all the AES publications including its international convention proceedings.
