Exploration of Spatial Audio Quality Assessment: A Critical Examination of Binauralized Multi-Channel Musical Immersive Audio Excerpts

This study investigates the evaluation of spatial audio quality in multi-channel musical audio excerpts binauralized with the APL Virtuoso plug-in. Utilizing a hybridized PCMA 3D array, Rode NTSF-1 Ambisonic microphone and a proposed microphone array (CCMM), the research involves the analysis of the results from a controlled subjective listening test with 34 participants. The focus is on assessing criteria such as spaciousness, presence, envelopment type and amount, immersiveness, and personal preference across steel string acoustic guitar and fretless nylon string guitar microtonal music audio excerpts. The study addresses challenges in spatial audio assessment, emphasizing ambiguities in audio terminology and the complexities of subjective interpretation. It explores the interpretive overlap among spatial audio descriptors and the implications of such overlaps for audio quality assessment. The research contributes to understanding the efficacy of various microphone arrays in capturing spatial audio and highlights the intricacies of subjective audio evaluation in the context of immersive audio experiences.
