Design Criteria of a Universal Compandor for the Elimination of Audible Noise in Tape, Disc, and Broadcast Systems

The noise requirements of a compansion system for the elimination of audible noise in recordings and broadcasts are described. These requirements include improved high frequency headroom of the medium, relative insensitivity to gain and phase errors of the medium, and superior listenability of the compressed signal. An experimental compandor system designed to meet these requirements will be discussed. Comparison of this system with other current systems will be discussed.
