The Dolby B-type noise reduction system is widely used in consumer audio equipment. The requirements of the processor circuitry are discussed and the development of an integrated circuit to perform the processing function described. Design emphasis was placed on the elimination of external adjustments. The single monolithic chip contains the main circuit elements of the Dolby B-type system. Included are: four signal amplifiers, combining circuits, rectifier, variable rate integrator, overshoot suppressor, regulator circuitry, and a new highly accurate variable impedance stage.
