Moving-Coil Loudspeaker Topology as an Indicator of Linear Excursion Capability

Knowledge of a loudspeaker structure`s physical dimensions and features can directly predict both maximum excursion before damage, and linear excursion limit as defined by psychoacoustic or performance criteria. Various voice coil, magnetic gap, and suspension configurations are discussed in terms of their potential for linear motion. Measurements which substantiate the predicted linearity are presented, and specific structures and mechanisms which extend or degrade the predicted linearity are also discussed.
