By means of computer simulations, a flare rate discontinuity was introduced into an exponential horn thereby treating a new section exponential horn. The position and extend of the discontinuity were varied. The effects of these two parameters on impedance, frequency response and smoothness were examined. The conclusions are that the low-frequency response of horns can to an extent be tailored to suit requirements without undue penalties of distortion and loss of smoothness. The tailoring includes a flattest response option. The significance of this paper is that it enables better exponential (type) horns to be designed to give improved low frequency response with less size or distortion penalty than existing types. Two examples are shown of commercial horns designed by this method.
