Large Signal Performance of Audio Power Amplifiers in the Frequency Domain

This paper shows how to model and calculate the influence of voltage rate limitations on the large signal frequency response of audio power amplifiers. These results provide the means of relating the parameters and operating conditions of the amplifier to the large signal performance in the frequency domain. The threshold of large signal distortion can be determined and used to improve the large signal performance of the audio power amplifier. Examples of power amplifiers which use lead and lag compensation are presented to illustrate the effects of voltage rate limitations in the frequency domain. A simple method of measuring large signal distortion is suggested. The conditions necessary for the phenomenon of jump resonance to occur in an audio power amplifier and its potential influence on the performance of the amplifier are presented.
