Preechoes and postechoes may spoil the listener`s enjoyment or the artistic sensation of speech and music, especially in forceful or dramatic program material. Antiecho measures are therefore a must for quality disk-record manufacturers, at least for the classical repertoire. During the three disk manufacturing steps-transcription, electroforming, and pressing-numerous factors influence echo formation. Only a few of these effects are discussed in this report. Forms of the preecho and postecho characteristic of the three manufacturing stages are shown, and an attempt is made to explain the origin of each type of echo. Suggestions are given for minimizing echo formation as much as possible.
