R-DAT and Professional Audio

The basic R-DAT format was originally centered on consumer use. However, it offers many possibilities (and also some limitations) for use in professional applications. This paper outlines in which way many of the practical requirements of today`s professional audio can be covered by the R-DAT format, while keeping full compatibility with the consumer format. The paper covers audio parameters, interlacing, Time Code, auxiliary data of the AES/EBU Interface, and rules for the efficient use of R-DATs Subcode and other auxiliary information in a professional environment. The possible features of professional-use R-DAT equipment resulting from such rules are shown to cover a very wide range of applications in professional audio and to ensure good system compatibility.
