An Extension of the CD Mastering System Format for CD-ROM Mastering

The increasing demand of CD-ROM, which is a superset of conventional CD for software and data applications, has brought new requirements to the area of CD mastering. A natural and cost-effective solution is to extend the existing world-wide U-matic-based recording format. CD-ROM mastering imposes even higher requirements on data integrity than audio CD mastering, as residual errors cannot be handled by interpolation. This paper proposes an extension of the CD Mastering System which reduces residual errors to the very low levels required for software and data applications.
