Music Processing Using the TMS 32020

Over the past year, the author has investigated many signal processing algorithms implemented on the TMS 32020. Many of these algorithms resulted in subjectively pleasing results, while others produced strange and unnatural-sounding results. The purpose of this paper is to: 1) Describe the nature of the algorithms and their effect on the sound, 2) describe some of the difficulties encountered during the coding process due to the architecture of the TMS 32020, and 3) suggest improvements in existing DSP architectures which would result in an optimal DSP processor for professional audio applications. We will divide the section on algorithms into the following categories: 1) adaptive techniques, such as adaptive linear prediction, 2) dynamics processing, and 3) filtering.
