Experiment on S-DAT with Headphone Stereo Size Mechanism

The stationary head digital audio tape recorder (S-DAT) is suitable for simple and small tape transport. Our prototype model of S-DAT, with headphone-stereo size, showed a good performance in sound recording and playback operation. This report describes the structure and the performance of our mechanism. The tape cartridge was developed for S-DAT and the characteristics of the mechanism are as follows: 1) Tape-transport with single capstan and pressure pad, 2) speed servo in playback operation was achieved by using one small DC motor, 3) a combination head which is made of a recording head and a playback head has a crown shape; it can be optimized for high-density recording with a single capstan mechanism, and 4) simple two-tape guides are capable of µm order tape guiding.
