Dither minimizes distortion and improves resolution in processing analog and digital audio signals. An appropriate amount and type of dither added to computer generated test signals greatly enhances the usefulness of the sequences in evaluating digital audio systems. For levels below -60 dB dithered test signals become necessary for accurate measurement of linearity and an uncluttered characterization of harmonic distortion. In addition, the lack of correlated distortion and the benign nature of the noise accompanying these signals make them highly suitable for subjective evaluation of system performance. A theoretical discussion and actual measurements of digital audio professional and consumer compact disc (CD) equipment using newly developed techniques are presented.
