A surround sound pan-pot which allows 360° horizontal virtual imaging is described. The design basis is that of spectral stereo theory rather than the (averaged) measured head related transfer functions used in current virtual imaging systems. The principal advantage being the achievement of natural sounding virtual images with significantly reduced computational requirements for virtual imaging filter realization.
