Research into magnetic recording history can trace the invention of this technique back to 1878 (cf. -A Hundred Years of Magnetic Sound Recording-, JAES Vol.36 No.3, 1988). The American Oberlin Smith`s disappointment at the unsatisfying results of the first Edison Phonograph encouraged him to his own developments in the field of sound recording. Original documents, found only a few months ago, give opportunity for a new evaluation of Smith`s work.
