By measuring the ratio of the nearfield pressure to diaphragm acceleration of a loudspeaker when it is mounted on a large enough baffle, the effective radiating surface area of the diaphragm can be calculated. This method, which is based on simplified expressions of the nearfield pressure generated by a flat piston, can be applied in the low frequency range as long as there are no resonances excited. In order to verify the theoretical calculations, pistons of different shapes as well as loudspeakers were measured. Results obtained using different methods are presented in this paper.
