A method and the associated apparatus are described in which a piece of prerecorded magnetic tape is exposed to the magnetic field of a lighting surge flowing in a conductor. The extent of erasure of the signal is later determined on a modified playback machine. The apparatus is nonpowered, inexpensive, rugged and will tolerate polarity reversals.
