A new network protocol for the transfer of multimedia data is presented. The new protocol is called Media Oriented Synchronous Transfer (MOST), and provides the delivery of synchronous, asynchronous, and control data over a low cost fiber optic network. An integrated circuit with MOST transceiver, routing processor, and consumer electronics interface has been designed and manufactured for use in multimedia networks. Clock recovery at each node allows all devices on a network to be synchronized to a single clock source, eliminating the need for buffering and/or sample rate conversion due to clock drift. The fiber optic network is immune to electromagnetic interference and ground loops, and distances of 250 m can be achieved between nodes without the use of repeaters.
