Three different methods for segmenting the envelope of nonpercussive musical signals are compared: 1) constant attack time, 2) attack time based on 50% of the steady-state rms amplitude, and 3) a new model that is based on the relationship between global amplitude and spectral characteristics. The results of a 198-item identification experiment indicate that regardless of edit, the steady state is more salient than any other envelope constituent for isolated single tones. The feasibility and advantages of the new models are discussed.
