The paper discusses the stereo and multichannel coding methods introduced into MPEG-2 NBC. The first method is pairwise stereo coding using both mid/side (M/S) and intensity stereo (IS) coding operating on individual scale-factor bands. Further accommodations for multichannel audio include the extension of intensity stereo to multiple channels, identification of symmetric pairs of audio signals in the bit stream, and explicit noise coding for down-mix channels.
